Gandhara Trail
The Ancient Kingdom of Gandhara
Saniya’s Cultural Express (SCE) would be honoured to host you to an ancient crossroads of trade and culture between India, Central Asia, and the Middle East
Gandhara, historical region in what is now north-western Pakistan, corresponding to the Vale of Peshawar and having extensions into the lower valleys of the Kabul and Swat rivers. The region was subject to Achaemenid Persia in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE and was conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE. From the 1st century BCE to the 6th–7th century CE, Gandhara was the home of a distinctive art style that was a mixture of Indian Buddhist and Greco-Roman influences.
Well-known cities and important cultural centres of the Gandhara include TAKSHASILA (TAXILA), PURUSHAPURA (PESHAWAR) & PUSHKALAVATI (MARDAN), where remains continue to be found to this day and will be the focus of our trail.
